Homemade, Caffeine-Free Chai Tea

Image: Elana's Pantry Earlier this week I gave you the low-down on caffeine's harmful effects, and suggested some coffee alternatives.

One of my favourite caffeinated beverages has got to be chai tea - especially an almond-milk chai latte. Unfortunately, the black tea in chai is pretty heavily caffeinated, and can affect my energy in a negative way.

Which is why I LOVE this recipe from Elana's Kitchen for a spicy, warming, caffeine-free chai.

Sip and enjoy!

Homemade Chai

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 inch ginger, sliced
  • 8 pods cardamom
  • 6 whole peppercorns
  • 1 bag peppermint tea (or 1 tablespoon loose peppermint tea)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a pot and place on stove over medium heat.

Bring to a boil, then turn down and simmer for 15 minutes.

Strain into mugs.

Serve piping hot with agave and almond milk (optional).
